Frank Vincent Zappa (21 décembre 1940 - 4 décembre 1993) était un musicien de rock, compositeur, réalisateur et satiriste américain. Pendant sa carrière musicale de 33 ans, Zappa a prouvé qu'il était l'un des musiciens-compositeurs les plus prolifiques de son ère, en réalisant plus de 60 albums, la plupart d'entre eux constitués de compositions originales. Il était aussi un guitariste (électrique) renommé et un ingénieur-producteur doué, qui a réalisé lui-même presque tous les enregistrements qu'il a faits après ses débuts en 1966.
Son travail a exploré tous les styles musicaux contemporains (notamment l'avant-garde, le Rock, le doo-wop, le jazz, le jazz fusion, le reggae, le ska, la musique électronique, la musique contemporaine, le blues, le funk, la musique concrète, le hard rock, le big band, le rock progressif, la pop, le proto-rap et la world music), et était souvent reconnu pour son mélange d'art, d'opéra rock, d'absurde, d'humour scatologique, et pour son hilarante satire sociale. Il était aussi connu comme un révélateur de talent, et ses différents groupes ont compté parmi leurs membres d'illustres musiciens comme Adrian Belew, Lowell George, Jean-Luc Ponty, Aynsley Dunbar, Ruth Underwood, George Duke, Vinnie Colaiuta, Mike Keneally, Terry Bozzio, Tommy Mars, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Jeff Berlin et Steve Vai.
